Share of search
Updated 2026-09-15
Share of search is a brand's share of branded search volume within its category — a demand measure built from what people type into a search engine. AI share of voice measures a different thing: how often a brand is named inside generated answers for category questions.
How the two relate
Share of search reflects existing awareness: people already know the name and are looking for it. AI share of voice reflects discovery: an engine chose to name the brand while answering a question that did not contain it. The two can move independently, and the interesting case is when they disagree — high search share with low AI share usually means engines have little to cite about you, while the reverse means AI surfaces are introducing you to people who do not search for you yet.
Illustrative contrast (example numbers)
A brand holds roughly a fifth of branded search in its category but appears in 8% of sampled AI answers for the same category questions. The demand exists; the evidence engines need to name the brand does not — which is a content and citation problem, not an awareness one.
Common mistakes
- Reporting one metric as a proxy for the other. They measure awareness and discovery respectively.
- Expecting AI visibility to move branded search volume within one cycle.
- Comparing AI share of voice across tools with different competitor sets, which makes it look like search-share data when it is not.
Frequently asked questions
- Which should a marketing team report?
- Both, labelled clearly. Share of search is the awareness trend; AI share of voice is the discovery trend, and a healthy programme wants movement in the second before the first.
- Can AI visibility increase branded search?
- Plausibly, over time, since answers introduce the name to people who then search for it — but attributing a specific lift to it requires more care than most reporting can support.
