Google AI Mode
Updated 2026-09-15
Google AI Mode is a conversational search experience where the user asks follow-up questions and receives generated answers rather than a results page. It sits alongside AI Overviews, which appear above conventional results, and behaves more like a chat assistant than a SERP feature.
How it differs for measurement
Two differences matter. Conversations have state: the second question is answered in the context of the first, so a prompt measured in isolation is not the same prompt a user experiences mid-conversation. And access is less standardised than a SERP fetch, so vendor coverage varies — some tools list it as a tracked surface, others do not, and the tier you buy decides what you actually get. Treat claimed coverage as a question for the vendor rather than an assumption.
Illustrative sequence (example)
Turn one asks for the best options in a category and names three brands. Turn two asks "which of those is cheapest for a small team" and drops two of them. Measuring only turn one would record a mention that the conversation immediately discarded.
Common mistakes
- Assuming AI Mode and AI Overviews are the same surface with one number between them.
- Buying a tier that lists the surface on the marketing page but excludes it at your price point.
- Measuring single-turn prompts and reporting them as conversational visibility.
Frequently asked questions
- Should AI Mode be in a prompt set today?
- If your buyers use it and your tool can reach it, yes — but report it as its own surface rather than folding it into an AI Overviews number.
- Does content optimisation differ for AI Mode?
- Not fundamentally: the same self-contained, quotable, current content wins. What changes is that follow-up questions reward pages that answer the next question too.
