AI Overviews

Updated 2026-09-15

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google renders inside the search results page for some queries, with a small set of source links attached. The defining property for measurement is that they are conditional: many searches produce no overview at all.

How the surface behaves

Whether an overview appears is decided per query and changes over time, which makes a three-way outcome the only honest way to record it: an overview appeared and named the brand, an overview appeared without the brand, or no overview was generated. Sources are drawn from pages Google already surfaces for the query, and the summary usually compresses several of them into a few sentences with links.

Illustrative sampling (example numbers)

A query is checked three times in one cycle: overview present twice, absent once. The brand is named in one of the two overviews. Mention rate for that query is 1/2 over the checks where the surface existed — not 1/3, which would count Google's decision not to generate an overview as a visibility failure.

Common mistakes

  • Averaging "no overview" into the denominator, which quietly manufactures a visibility problem.
  • Assuming an overview citation produces a click. The surface is designed to answer without one.
  • Sampling AI Overviews as often as chat engines. Each check is a metered SERP request, and the cost curve is steeper.

Frequently asked questions

Why do AI Overviews appear for some queries and not others?
Google decides per query, and revisits the decision. Informational and comparison queries see them more often than navigational ones, but the behaviour shifts, which is why presence has to be recorded per check rather than assumed.
Can a site opt out of AI Overviews?
Controls exist at the preview and snippet level, but opting out of the surface generally means opting out of the visibility it provides. The trade-off is worth measuring before it is made.
