Answer engine optimization (AEO)

Answer engine optimization is the practice of structuring content so that an answer engine can extract, quote and attribute a direct answer from it. In everyday use it overlaps heavily with GEO; where people separate them, AEO is the page-level craft and GEO is the brand-level programme.
What makes content answerable
The page-level pattern is consistent across engines: the question is answered in the first two sentences, the claim is stated as a fact rather than a promise, supporting detail is structured (tables, short lists, labelled steps) and the source of any number is visible. Engines then quote the sentence that needs the least repair. Content that requires the model to infer the answer from three paragraphs of narrative loses to content that states it once, plainly.
Illustrative rewrite (example, not a customer measurement)
Before: a 400-word introduction about the importance of sample size. After: "A visibility rate needs at least three samples per prompt per cycle; below that, a single unusual answer moves the number more than your content does." The second version is quotable in full, so it is the version an answer engine can use.
Common mistakes
- Writing the answer-first paragraph and then contradicting it later on the page — engines quote the clearest sentence, not the last one.
- Hiding numbers in images or interactive widgets, where no engine can read them.
- Adding FAQ markup that does not match the visible text, which is a markup violation rather than a shortcut.
Frequently asked questions
- Is AEO different from featured-snippet optimisation?
- It grew out of it and kept the discipline: state the answer in a quotable block. The difference is that a generated answer merges several sources, so being the clearest source matters more than owning one snippet position.
- Does AEO work without any technical SEO?
- Not reliably. Grounded engines retrieve from what search already indexes, so crawlability, canonical hygiene and page speed still decide whether your answerable content is ever retrieved.
