Google AI Overviews

Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries rendered inside the search results page for some queries. The defining property for measurement is that the surface itself is conditional: for many searches no overview is generated at all, and that absence is not the same as your brand being omitted.

How it picks sources

Overviews are assembled from pages Google already ranks for the query, with a preference for content that states the answer directly and can be attributed in a short link list. Because the surface summarises rather than lists, a page can feed an overview while receiving almost no click — attribution and traffic diverge sharply here.

Grounding behaviour

Always grounded in search results by construction, but only when the surface appears. Tracking therefore has a three-way outcome per query rather than two: an overview appeared and mentioned you, an overview appeared without you, or no overview appeared at all.

How to track it

Fetch the search result page through a SERP API, record whether an overview block was present before recording anything else, and store the overview text and its source links when it was. Queries with no overview belong in their own bucket — averaging them in as misses produces a number that punishes you for Google's behaviour rather than measuring your visibility.

Measurement mistakes

  • Counting "no overview" as a zero. It is the most common way AI-visibility numbers are quietly inflated in the wrong direction.
  • Tracking AI Overviews continuously at high volume without noticing the cost: SERP fetches are metered per query, which is why many tools sample this surface less often than chat engines.
  • Expecting a citation in an overview to produce clicks. The surface is designed to answer in place.

What TAMGIO measures here

This surface is measured in TAMGIO Audit Mode rather than continuously, because each check is a metered SERP request.

Frequently asked questions

Why did an AI Overview disappear for a query we were cited in?
Because the surface is conditional and Google re-evaluates it constantly. A disappearing overview usually reflects a query-level decision by Google rather than a change in your content.
How should a report present queries with no overview?
As their own category, stated explicitly, and excluded from mention-rate denominators. A report that hides them behind an average is misreporting the measurement.
